Structured magnetic surfaces enabling programmable motion of single micrometer‐sized magnetic particles are reported on p. 1730 by Gunnarsson and co‐workers. Patterns of thin‐film magnetic elements are tailored to form transport lines with junctions for the separation of individual particles. This method has the potential to improve and generate new applications in biotechnology. Reaction-induced phase separation (RIPS) of miscible blends of poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) and an epoxy resin based on poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) was used to prepare thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) with fine rubber dispersions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the formation of cross-linked rubber particles dispersed in the thermoplastic matrix at PCL contents ≥20 wt%. The morphology development during phase separation was studied by optical microscopy (OM) and time-resolved small-angle light scattering (SALS). It was shown that higher curing temperatures lead to a decrease in rubber particle size, but at the same time lead to an increase in the extent of particle connectivity. In some cases, gelation of the PPO-rich phase limits full structure development, which leads to extensive connectivity between the dispersed rubber particles and a strong deterioration in tensile properties. 相似文献

Virus-specific tubules are characteristic of orbivirus infections and are likely to play an important role in virus morphogenesis. It has been shown that for bluetongue virus (BTV), the prototype orbivirus in the family Reoviridae, the virus-encoded NS1 protein forms tubules in insect cells when the BTV segment M6 gene is expressed by using a baculovirus vector. To understand the function of NS1 tubules and to identify the sequences involved in their polymerization, a series of mutant NS1 genes was generated and expressed in insect cell cultures by using baculovirus vectors. Three of the mutants were deletion mutants. One (AcNS1.dNT10) lacked 10 of the amino-terminal amino acids, and the other two mutants (AcNS1.dCT20 and AcNS1.dCT43) lacked 20 or 43 of the carboxy-terminal amino acids. In addition, site-directed mutants were constructed in which various single cysteines or pairs of cysteines were changed to serines. The ability of each mutant protein to form tubules was investigated. None of the deletion mutants formed tubules. The constructs in which the cysteines at amino acid positions 337 and/or 340 were replaced by serines (e.g., AcNS1.C337S,C340S) also did not form tubules. Instead, the NS1 protein of these and the deletion mutants made ribbon-like structures which formed large aggregates. Mutations involving six other cysteines (i.e., AcNS1.C37S,C43S,AcNS1.C462S,C465S, AcNS1.C104S, and AcNS1.C364S) produced tubules. The results show that both the amino and carboxy termini of the NS1 protein molecule and the cysteines at residues 337 and 340 are essential for tubule formation. 相似文献

Polyaniline (PAN), poly(o‐bromoaniline) (POBA), and poly(aniline‐co‐o‐bromoaniline) (PABA) were synthesized by oxidative coupling. These polymers are protonated by 10–20% methane sulfonic acid (MSA) and 1M HCl. The new polymer bases have greater solubility than that of PAN in common polar organic solvents; PAN–MSA was observed to be the most thermally stable of these polymers. POBA is associated with residual quinoid diimine units as illustrated in the IR and UV‐vis spectra, after reduction with hydrazine dihydrochloride. Both the doping agents cause a downward shift of the quinoid absorption in the IR spectra. MSA‐ and HCl‐doped PAN and PABA polymers exhibit a coil‐like conformation in DMSO, whereas only MSA‐doped PAN and PABA show an “expanded coil‐like” conformation in m‐cresol with a “free carrier tail” above 800 nm in their electronic spectra. XPS spectra indicated the presence of covalent bromine in the POBA and PABA polymers. Bromine retention was greater in the homopolymer as evidenced by the IR studies after aging at 350°C. Compared to HCl, MSA is found to be a more effective dopant, enhancing the conductivity of the copolymers by 102–103 times in magnitude. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electrical resistivity of short carbon fibre filled thermoplastic elastomers based on natural rubber-high density polyethylene (NR-HDPE) blend and styrene-isoprene-styrene (S-I-S) block copolymer has been studied by varying the concentration of fibre from the 0 to 40 phr level. A sharp drop in resistivity is observed in both cases after a critical concentration of fibre is reached, with the S-I-S system showing lower values of critical concentration. At higher concentrations, experimental values of the electrical conductivity agreed reasonably well with the calculated values from a theory based on the probability of formation of a conductive network. The effect of temperature on the resistivity of the composites has also been investigated in a temperature range of 27–120 °C and 27–90 °C for the NR-HDPE system and S-I-S system, respectively. The type of carrier in both the composites is found to be n-type, i.e. electrons, and the activation energy of hopping of the electrons for both the systems has been calculated.
